Sustainable Skeletal Buildings Function Like Living Organisms

Multiple Natures-Fibrous Tower”

 
Architects have been drawing inspiration from nature for centuries. But it’s only with recent developments in production materials and digital modeling tools that it became possible to design buildings that perform like biological, organic forms.

Austrian architectural firm SOMA, presented this concept design titled “Multiple Natures-Fibrous Tower” for a client in the city of Taichung in Taiwan. The project combines a signature zero carbon footprint tower and a museum at its base. The design is based on a foundation of biological principles such as having:

  • Intertwining vertical structures that allow for the free movement of wind and elements in the air.
  • A facade that absorbs solar energy and responds to sunlight by opening and closing.
  • The ability to harness energy by drawing on photovoltaic cells from the roof areas.
  • Piezoelectric sensors, which convert natural phenomena like pressure or force into an electrical charge
