Researchers create bubble-filled glass, a medical breakthrough

Researchers from Clemson University created “bubbled-filled gas” which produces images clearer than any available commercially manufactured optical fibres for all-encompassing medical dealings.

This discovery may show the way to endoscopes taking much clearer images to easily determine colon cancer, digestive problems, ulcers and other serious medical issues. The landmark accomplishment earned a place on “Physics World’s Top 10 Breakthroughs of 2014.”

Early this year, this research was published in the journal Nature Communications. John Ballato led the efforts to the glass optical fibre production at the Clemson University’s Center for Optical Material Science and Engineering Technologies. He is a professor of Material Science and Engineering at the said university. According to him, the optical fibre created contains bubbles similar to beer foam which makes the glass tough to spot when observed from the side.

“It turns out if you make those bubbles the right size relative to the size of the light and put them in a structure like a fiber, then, lo and behold, a whole different branch of physics opens up,” Ballato stated. “And you can get a greater ability to image something,” he added.

The team behind the thin optical fibre production is composed of a technician at Clemson University, John Ballato and other experts from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Corning Inc. The project researchers state that their works has developed opportunities to make imaging fibres based on a “theory in the field of condensed physics.” This theory is called as “Anderson localization” and was initially formulated in 1958. This was formulated by Philip Anderson, a physicist who shared the “1977 Nobel Prize” for a related work.
