Professor LM Das of the Centre for Energy Studies at IIT Delhi always dreamed of inventing an alternative fuel for vehicles that emitted water instead of harmful gases. After 25 years of nurturing that dream he has finally made it a reality. He has replaced petrol and diesel with hydrogen.
“Hydrogen can be made from both renewable and non-renewable sources. It’s made from water. On combustion, it gives back water. The noxious emission from burning petroleum products is almost completely absent here,” said Professor Das.
As hydrogen is a highly explosive gas, Professor Das designed a special electronic ignition system to process it. After testing the engine for years at IIT Delhi, Das finally took it out on to the road this year. He now has 15 of his vehicles safely ferrying people around the massive Pragati Maidan in Delhi.
