The cleverly named Thermite is a small firefighting robot that does jobs humans can’t, or at least probably shouldn’t do.
While there can be no doubt that Thermite is cute for a robot, we have yet to learn if it will also displace firefighters from their traditional role on office calendars.
Thermite creator Howe and Howe Technologies wastes no time in playing up the bot’s versatility. Robots simply don’t mind heat, chemicals, explosions and other similarly dangerous situations as much as us meatforms do. The versatility doesn’t come as a surprise from a machine that looks like a boat stacked on a tank. That is, of course, how versatility works in the real world.
In practical terms, the Thermite can pump 600 gallons of water per minute. That compares favorably to the 1500 gallons per minute pump rate of a standard fire engine, especially when you consider — as pointed out by IEEE Automaton — that the Thermite costs an eighth of what an engine does.
