One of the greatest tragedies of a refugee population is the months and years lost while in camps and temporary housing. A person in a stable situation spends that time building a career, going to school, setting aside a nest egg and taking other steps along the highway of life. Refugees must spend the bulk of their time doing very little, waiting for supplies and opportunities, often without even a large enough library to spend that time reading. Kiron University, a crowdfunding project on Startnext, may help mitigate some of that loss.
The project would put on-site classes, and access to online coursework, at the hands of refugee populations for free. The initiative would allow them to make some headway in their lives, or even begin work toward a new career, during the otherwise lost months they would spend waiting for visa processing and other paperwork to move them back into established society.
The university project works for refugees in Britain, Switzerland, Ireland and other countries accepting them, with core classes in languages so refugees can enter their new countries without a language gap. Professors from Yale, Stanford and Harvard have agreed to teach the courses, ensuring a top-level education for those who participate.
