The best way to transform a “broken” healthcare system
During this year’s SXSW Festival, StartUp Health, a hybrid entrepreneurial incubator and academy focused on reforming the healthcare industry, announced its first class of 10 entrepreneurs (chosen from a pool of 400 applicants) who will take part in the intensive three-year program. Based on a simple premise that the best way to transform a “broken” healthcare system is to provide entrepreneurs working in health with the education and critical resources they need to build viable business solutions, the academy aims to empower savvy individuals with access to the capital and know-how they need to spur innovation.

The Academy is structured as a 3-year curriculum with strategic thinking tools and collaborative peer groups designed to help innovators navigate the many challenges of building a sustainable growth business in the health sector. We believe there is great power in these networks and in the access we provide to the community of customers, investors, and partners we have organized to transform healthcare.
Unlike similar programs that support start-ups, many of the companies run by entrepreneurs in its inaugural class are well on their way in terms of funding and staff, but are still lacking some of the necessary support and structure to create truly sustainable businesses. The companies therefore represent a diverse vision for improving the delivery of care from mobile tools and real-time data to remote assistance and new therapies.
