Via makes getting around more convenient through an on-demand service

As the basic idea of the rideshare app continues to expand, Uber and Lyft aren’t the only companies offering rides on demand.

Via hopes to create its own place in the ridesharing market by offering an alternative to not just taxis but also public transportation. The idea: Carpool with other riders to save money and reduce your carbon footprint.

Using the app, riders can request a ride and then hop into the car with other users going to the same area. Via caters to riders in New York and Chicago. Rides costs $5 (not including tax) in New York from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and $5.95 (not including tax) from 9 p.m. to midnight. Frequent riders can also buy Ride Credit after their first five rides.

Each ride accommodates three to six passengers and riders can rate their drivers, similar to the current processes on existing ride-sharing systems.
