A new technology that has the potential to break the persistent severe drought in the Horn of Africa could be the panacea to ending persistent drought and famine in Kenya’s North Eastern province and Somalia.
The technology, known as RAINAID, developed by the Australian company Aquiess, is touted as a scientific breakthrough capable of mitigating drought and famine in the Horn of Africa where thousands have died or lost their livestock in the recent past.
David Miles, a scientist and founder of the company, says according to a pilot project deployed in the country early in August the technology has proved to be critical in delivery of rain in advance of the normal start of the rainy season.
Miles noted that since the deployment of the technology in the Horn of Africa there has been a significant improvement of rainfall above the normal rainfall experienced during this short rainy season.
“The delivery of gentle soaking rain over two weeks in advance of the normal rainy season in mid October, gives hope for an end of the severe drought in this part of Africa. We intended to extend the rainy season to January,” he added to OnIslam.net.
The short rainy season normally starts in mid October, but with the help of the technology the Horn of Africa witnessed rainfall two weeks before the start of actual rain season projected by meteorological institutions.
