Open Source Beehives is a citizen science project developed by a team of ecologists, beekeepers, makers, engineers, and open source advocates who want to solve the colony collapse issue.
Currently raising funds on Indiegogo, it enables people to download and print a beehive for their own garden.
Two beehives have been designed for the project, the Colorado Top Bar and the Barcelona Warré. These hives aim to prioritise bee colony health, make beekeeping more accessible, and allow people to log and study the health of a colony.
Contributions from the Indiegogo campaign will help the team develop sensors to enhance the hives, connecting them to the Internet to log data about what is to blame for the bees’ dwindling population around the world. This bee monitoring sensor package will be based on the Smart Citizen Kit.
