A laser syringe being developed in Coimbra should be on the market within a year

A laser syringe being developed in Coimbra should be on the market within a year, one of the researchers, Carlos Serpa, said this week.

The ‘Laserleap’ is unlike traditional syringes that have a needle, but can still get drugs to the right place using a laser beam.

The prototype was unveiled on Monday at Coimbra University where the project began its life in 2008 at the hands of three Chemistry department researchers.

The laser beam creates a shock wave that, when it hits the skin, produces “a kind of earthquake, leaving it permeable for a few seconds”, to a cream or gel containing the drug, Serpa explained.
