Goodyear has come up with an novel invention that it is announcing today: self-inflating tires.

The tires have an inflation device inside each of them that would keep track of their inflation and add air as necessary. Not only would they be safer because tires would never fall to dangerously low inflation levels, they would also eliminate the need for cars’ required tire pressure monitoring systems. Also, they would save gas, since Goodyear says underinflated tires decrease gas mileage by up to 3.3%.

Goodyear says its “Air Maintenance Technology” will enable tires to remain inflated at the optimum pressure without the need for any external pumps or electronics. All components of the AMT system, including the miniaturized pump, will be fully contained within the tire.
