ARKYD is an orbiting space telescope that can be controlled by the public – its primary aim is to make space exploration accessible to anyone who is interested.

Technology that would normally cost tens of millions of dollars can now be sourced publicly and donated to local universities, non-profits and other groups in the community. Giving these kinds of groups and individuals access to technology that would normally be inaccessible opens up the possibility of discoveries happening outside of the companies who receive huge government funding.

The company behind the telescope is normally focused on asteroid mining but has also added a few extra features to make the idea of a publicly accessible telescope more appealing. These include taking a photo of yourself in space, taking photos of far-off galaxies or searching for dangerous asteroids.
