A US study which has treated damage caused by heart attacks using the patient’s own stem cells has achieved “striking” breakthroughs, according to the scientists involved.

In the trial, cardiac stem cells were used to repair severe damage to the hearts of 16 patients – the first time such an experiment had ever been carried out in humans.

After one year of treatments, the efficiency of the hearts of eight of the patients had increased by more than 12 per cent, and all patients enjoyed some form of recovery.

The improvement was triple the four per cent the researchers had been hoping to see.

The researchers acknowledge that the trial was an “early stage” investigation and that far wider reaching trials were needed, but stressed that, even at this early stage, the treatment showed enormous promise.

“The results are striking,” said Professor Roberto Bolli, a research leader from the University of Louisville in the US.

“While we do not yet know why the improvement occurs, we have no doubt now that ejection fraction increased and scarring decreased.
