Smart Tires Adapt To Road Conditions As You Drive

The driver no longer has to think about adapting their tyres

A team of German researchers from the University of Applied Sciences in Leipzig are developing an “intelligent” tire that automatically adapts to the weather conditions as you are driving along. The tire was unveiled at the Hanover Fair, the world’s largest industrial fair, which took place in Germany at the end of April.

The adaptive tire is equipped with electronic sensors that can recognize different kinds of terrain, like the motorway or un-tarmacked roads, and can identify whether it’s dry, raining or snowing. Once it has determined the conditions, the tires’ profiles are automatically raised or widened accordingly, and this can take place even when the car is in motion. Detlef Riemer, who heads the team, explained the benefits:
