“‘I have read and agree to the Terms’ is the biggest lie on the web,”
“‘I have read and agree to the Terms’ is the biggest lie on the web,” say the organisers of a website called ToS;DR. “We aim to fix that.”
The crowdsourced site takes the novel-length terms of service agreements on popular websites like Twitter and SoundCloud, and breaks down the pertinent points into a bullet-point list of terms, written in plain language.
Each point gets a badge — good, mediocre, alert or simply “informative” — depending on how fair they are compared to other services. Points are tallied up, and the site is given a grade.
A class websites “treat you fairly, respect your rights and will not abuse your data,” while E rank sites “raise very serious concerns.” The final grade is the result of a transparent and peer-reviewed process, on a public working groupat Google Groups.
